Since 1998 we have been at the forefront of sustainable living initiatives, offering a range of resources, education, and services that support a healthier, more sustainable future for our community.

Our Sustainability Centre

The Waiheke Sustainability Centre has been home to the WRT offices, workshops and ecostore refillery since 2016. A hub for our community, it provides a unique and welcoming space that groups can hire to host events and connect with the Waiheke community.

A huge thank you to @macpac for their generous donation towards WRT's Waiheke Waterways project! Waiheke Waterways project (WW) aims to protect and restore Waiheke waterways by helping the community manage their septic tanks, offering discounted inspections, organizing events and workshops, and sharing educational materials with new residents. WW also trains community members to monitor the health of local catchments streams using the Wai Care framework. Little Oneroa, Omiha/Rocky Bay, Palm Beach and Onetangi are the key catchments targeted by WW. The kits donated by Macpac will be used to help our water monitoring and nighttime fish spotting 🐟 If you want to get involved in water testing around Waiheke, please email nathalya@wrt.org.nz

Had a lovely turnout for this evening's Kai Gardens workshop on maintaining healthy living soil, facilitated by the enthusiastic Rob Velseboer! Kia ora rawa atu to our attendees who had lots of knowledge between them and some great questions to ask. Biggest takeaway for everyone:
Don't leave your soil bare!
Whether you mulch it with cardboard, grass clippings, barley straw, or something else, it's super important for moisture retention and also to keep your soil a healthy environment for the wormies 👌 Another way of keeping your soil from lying fallow is to grow a cover crop like clover, lupins, broad beans etc. Once your soil has been zapped by weather exposure it's difficult to get it going again and we are due for a hot dry summer, so it's extra important to care for your soil. That way, you will produce some delicious nutritious produce 😊 Our last Kai Gardens workshop - also free - will take place on Thurs Oct 12, 6-7pm at the Sustainability Centre and centre around organic gardening. 📨RSVP to Livne@wrt.org.nz

Before you go out to the grocery store to buy lemons, check out https://wrt.org.nz/foraging/ for Waiheke Resources Trust's fresh, free, and seasonal foraging map. A couple tips before you venture out:
1. Open the map in a new tab, or on a mobile device for optimal viewing.
2. Click on the large icons, as they are the ones currently in season.
3. If visiting a community garden or food hub, make sure to check their opening hours before you go.
4. Be considerate of the trees and the community. Refrain from over picking and picking unripe fruits.
5. If possible tidy up any fallen fruit. Happy foraging!
